Published Materials About the Orgone Energy Accumulator

The orgone energy accumulator was Wilhelm Reich's principal scientific and medical tool from 1940 to 1957. Its development dates back to early 1939 in Reich's laboratory in Oslo, Norway where he was trying to isolate and contain a radiation phenomenon he had recently discovered in certain bion cultures. The accumulator is, in fact, a modified Faraday cage which is a commonplace scientific apparatus that Reich began using to determine if this radiation phenomenon was simply electromagnetic energy.

Since physicist Michael Faraday's invention of the cage in 1836 as a foil-lined room--which excludes all exterior electrical energy from its enclosure--countless scientists have stood, sat, worked and experimented inside Faraday cages. Wilhelm Reich was one of them.

Reich named this radiation "orgone energy," and in July 1940--in Rangeley, Maine--he found that this energy was also present in the atmosphere.

Reich's first full-sized accumulator for human research was constructed in late October-early November of 1940 for his laboratory in New York. Reich's first medical research with human subjects using the accumulator began in New York in March 1941. And Reich's first published statement about the accumulator was a brief reference to a "certain apparatus in my laboratory" in the opening article of his first American research journal in March 1942, the International Journal of Sex-Economy and Orgone-Research – Volume 1, Number 1. The words "orgone accumulator" first appeared in the next issue of the ISJO (July 1942) in an article entitled "The Carcinomatous Shrinking Biopathy" in which Reich discussed his first medical case study using the accumulator. And in March 1943, Reich published his first detailed description of the orgone accumulator in the ISJO – Volume 2, Number 1 in an article entitled "Experimental Orgone Therapy of the Cancer Biopathy (1937-1953)."

The following materials provide the reader with the most substantial and accurate information about Reich's orgone energy accumulator available anywhere:

The most comprehensive information about Reich's development, scientific uses and medical applications of the orgone energy accumulator can be found in his 1948 book The Cancer Biopathy – The Discovery of the Orgone, Volume 2. In it, Reich documents his first decade of biological and clinical cancer research starting in his laboratory in Oslo, Norway, and continuing in his laboratories in Forest Hills, New York and in Rangeley, Maine.

Reich published this book through his Orgone Institute Press. It was subsequently banned from circulation in America in 1954 by order of a Federal Court injunction, and burned under the supervision of the Food and Drug Administration in 1956 and 1960. In 1973, in partnership with the Wilhelm Reich Infant Trust, the New York publisher Farrar, Straus & Giroux republished this book which is available in our Bookstore.

In 1951, Reich’s Orgone Institute Press issued a 56-page booklet entitled The Orgone Energy Accumulator - Its Scientific and Medical Use. This informative booklet was also banned and burned in the 1950s by order of a Federal Court injunction.

In 2004, the Wilhelm Reich Infant Trust compiled a 96-page Xerox-bound volume entitled Clinical Observations on the Use of the Orgone Energy Accumulator, comprising medical reports by physicians who had studied with Reich. These reports were originally published in the 1940s and 1950s in Reich's research journals and bulletins: International Journal of Sex-Economy and Orgone-Research, and C.O.R.E. (Cosmic Orgone Engineering).

Also available are the 13-page Plans for Constructing an Orgone Energy Accumulator, and the 3-page Plans for Constructing an Orgone Energy Blanket.
