Wilhelm Reich's original 1933 Massenpsychologie des Faschismus has been republished by Psychosozial-Verlag, a well-known publishing house specializing in psychoanalytic and psychotherapeutic issues. Previously Psychosozial published the first German translation from the English of Reich's Children of the Future and other works related to Reich's work, including Andreas Peglau's Unpolitische Wissenschaft: Wilhelm Reich und die Psychoanalyse im Nationalsozialismus (Unpolitical Science: Wilhelm Reich and Psychoanalysis under National Socialism).
Massenpsychologie des Faschismus is the first reissuing of Reich's original text after 87 years. It is clear that this important and insightful text remains relevant, and possibly more so, given the rise of openly fascistic political movements in Germany and elsewhere. As sociologist Helmut Dahmer reminds us:
In 1933, psychoanalysts and Stalinists alike, equally blinded, found no other answer to Reich's Mass Psychology of Fascism than to outlaw this author. Eight decades later, the long suppressed "National Socialist underground" reappears before our eyes in ghostly fashion. Reich's legendary original text from 1933 is needed again.
Psychosozial-Verlag's reissued text includes Reich's epilogue appended to the 2nd edition published in 1934, and Andreas Peglau's extensive appendix which includes a biographical and contemporary historical classification of the 1933 version, a timeline, editorial notes and a glossary. With the help of the original literature used by Reich and thorough research, it was possible for Peglau to link almost all the names mentioned with biographical details and to correct a whole series of incorrectly reproduced names. In this way, even those familiar with the text will be able to understand some contexts for the first time.
All those able to read the original German text, not just those who are serious scholars of Reich's work, should encounter this text. A portion of the sale of the book will benefit the Wilhelm Reich Infant Trust. To purchase the book, visit the publisher's website.
